sufferplenty interview
Who are you and what do you do?
my name is sufferplenty I’m a singer, rapper, songwriter and content creator from PG county Maryland. I make music, YouTube videos, advocate mental health and occasionally stream on twitch. It’s been my mission since I started making music back in 2017 to be there for my audience and remind them “we’re all suffering, you’re not alone”
Where did your name come from?
I used to go by DeathHimself and it started to feel like it didn’t suit me anymore once I started getting more serious about music back in 2019. When I was thinking of a new name “suffer” kept lingering in my mind likely because all that year I had been obsessed with Wicca Phase’s “suffer on” album but “suffer” by itself wasn’t unique enough so I just starting throwing words at the wall and eventually “sufferplenty” is what stuck.
Who or what inspired you to start?
Definitely XXXTENTACION although I think getting into music was inevitable and was gonna happen eventually. I had always had an interest in music and in middle school is really when I started to get involved in rap music and freestyling. Throughout 2013-2014 I had been loosely writing songs and by 2016-2017 I finally decided to pull the trigger and record a song. I immediately fell in love with the process and I don’t think I could stop now even if I wanted to.
What’s your favorite moment so far in your career?
Touring with foreign forest and deciding I can do this. Touring with forest was huge because I’ve been listening to him since high school so touring with him almost felt like a full circle moment and it wasn’t until earlier this year I stopped seeking other artist’s approval so it felt nice that he accepted me as myself and still treated me as an equal despite being very obviously much more successful than me from a music industry perspective. I’ve started to carry myself like I’ve already made it and I think my supporters as well as my peers are starting to catch onto that shift in my demeanor.
Who is your favorite artist/Band?
I’d say right now it’s a tie between Cr1tter and Deep October, I go through phases where I’ll be obsessed with certain artists for certain durations and really only listen to that artist, right now I’ve just been stuck on “Leah Was A Diver” by Deep October and “new trickz” by cr1tter.
What is something that inspires your art that might surprise your fans?
Russ but I don’t think it’s all that surprising, Russ is more mainstream R&B and hip hop in my opinion but since he blew up he’s always been about trying to share information and industry secrets with independent artists. Even at the level he’s at he still goes out of his way to show his human side, even writing two incredible books that focus on mental health and his experience balancing a music career while still trying to heal from his own personal issues.
What have you found to be the best way out of a creative rut?
Just do it. Sometimes the best inspiration is doing something even when you’re lacking inspiration, being an adult you have to do most things even when you don’t want to. Even if you’re sad, tired or sometimes even sick you still have to go to work. In my eyes I don’t see why or how music should be any different.
Who would be your ultimate super group? (Any genre)
i guess i would say Patrick Miranda from Movements for backup vocals, Oliver Francis if we needed any metalcore type screaming vocals, Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park as a guitarist, yunny goldz as a guitarist, my finacee joan (whokilledjoan) as bassist and for drums i'd say the homie Bailey (cxltmoon) idk if they're skilled with any instruments but they have drummer vibes for sure. fun fact when i was in middle school i actually almost started a band, it was gonna be called "Stopwatch" but i didn't have enough friends lol
How do you approach converting haters into fans?
Tbh I don’t, I find most haters are just people seeking attention and already have their mind made up about you so I don’t think it’s worth the time or energy trying to convert anyone. If you like it, cool, if you don’t then that’s cool too ! I’m a very firm believer that music is subjective, you can be a peach but not everybody likes peaches.
Dream collab?
guardin, 93FEETOFSMOKE, maybe Cr1tter, maybe Corbin. Lot of people I would love to work with but I won’t go out of my way to make it happen. A lot of artists do paid features and I think that’s really cool but if I was to work with one of my idols it would be sick if it happened naturally vs being forced. I actually almost landed a feature with 93 earlier this year but unfortunately it didn’t workout. I also sent an open to guardin but seeming as even lil skele has sent him an open a couple years back and never heard back I’m thinking it’s unlikely any of these would happen but who knows what the future holds for me.
What’s your favorite accessory or piece of clothing in your closet?
Probably my moon necklace, I found that the majority of the artists I listen to and look up to they’re all known for something with their appearance. For peep it was the crybaby tattoo or the black and pink hair. For X it was the blue hair and chain, for Lil Xan it was the face tattoos, for scarlxrd it was also a chain. So for me i wanted it to be the red hair and my logo, the waxing crescent moon. Having it tattoo’d on my hand + now always wearing a necklace with it on it I hope when people think of me, they’ll start to affiliate it with my name.
Message to the youth, or those getting started in your craft?
Just believe in yourself and stop focusing on everyone else. For the longest time I struggled with comparing myself and my growth with other people, I struggled a lot with chasing validation from others instead of myself. When you get validation from yourself and focus on your own journey, everything else just becomes background noise you have no reason to focus on. I feel a lot more confident in myself now that I just try to do my own thing, i would also suggest anyone reading this check out the laws of the universe and try applying them into their own life. It was life changing for me.
Where can we find your work?
@sufferplenty on all platforms, would highly recommend my soundcloud as well as my YouTube to anyone new. A lot of my older songs are YouTube, soundcloud exclusive and my YouTube also just generally has a lot more behind the scenes content than any other social media platform I’m on. If anyone really wants to know who I am outside of my music, my vlogs are a great place to start.
